#17 Man Starves Wife Until She Had Sex (It Was Legal)

August 30th 2009 in 30 in 30, Pt. 3, News/Current Events, Political

eating-in-bed

Did anybody else hear about this? I came across a BBC News article the other day about a new law that was passed in Afghanistan that made it perfectly legal for husbands to starve their wives if they refused to have sex. If that’s not crazy enough, this was actually the amended version of an already sexist law.

Earlier this year, Afghan President Hamid Karzai found himself at the center of controversy when he approved a bill that forced women to have sex with their husbands every four days at a minimum. Since consent wasn’t viewed as needed within the confines of a marriage, this was effectively condoning the legal rape of women. Karzai later folded to public outcry and withdrew the bill.

Karzai recently updated the law, but it is still being viewed as highly repressive of women’s rights. The amended bill now makes it legal for husbands to withhold food from their wives when they refuse his sexual demands. In addition, women must get their husband’s permission to work and fathers and grandfathers have exclusive custody of all children.

Critics believe Karzai was actually using this law as a way to lull votes from the conservative Shia community before Afghanistan’s recent elections. “There was a review process—Karzai came under huge pressure from all over the world to amend this law, but many of the most oppressive laws remain,” said Rachel Reid, a Human Rights Watch representative in Kabul. “What matters more to Karzai is the support of fundamentalists and hardliners here in Afghanistan whose support he thinks he needs in the elections.”

What do you think about this law? Does it surprise you that things like this are still happening in 2009? Do you think the government has a right to say how often a couple can have sex? Or is this a matter of cultural difference and if a society is structure where men are dominant that this law should be legal? Could you ever see something like this happening in America? What would you do if your mate tried to tell you y’all had to have sex a certain amount of times per week? Do you think the world will ever view the sexes as equals?

Yes this topic made the news over here in the UK. It’s appalling but it doesn’t surprise me that this is happening in Afghanistan at all. I recently read ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ (which is written by the same author as the Kite Runner) and it just opened my eyes to how women are perceived over there. Let me tell you that book brought me so close to tears and it takes a LOT for me to get to that point!

The government has no right to intervene in any couple’s view on sex! It is a matter of cultural difference (as I learned from reading the above book) but it’s just wrong on so many levels and something like this could never exist in the West.

As for what I would do if my mate tried to tel me we had to have sex a certain amount of times per week, if it was some proactive way to make our strenthen our relationship then yeah cool but if the purpose is to empower and make him seem more dominant then it’s obvious…drop him!

Women have already come a long way in being recognised as equals but I think (just like racism) there will always be a few undercover people who don’t see them on the same level. I work in an all male environment and I can’t say I’ve faced any major kind of discrimination but who knows, maybe it exists beneath the surface.

Nothing surprises me anymore. As much as we want to believe that women and men are equals, we’re not. Not really. Not even in our “western countries”. It’s like racism: politicially incorrect but alive and kicking.

That’s humans for you.

A man only tries to force himself on me once. That’s all I’m going to say.
Now on the other hand, can I demand to have sex more often – since I am a woman and supposedly of the weaker sex and all? *scratches chin* I wonder?!?!

Although I had not heard about this particular law, I have heard about others that are equally immoral. I wish I was surprised by it but there are many practices similar to this that takes place in different regions of the world. I read this book called infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali that gave some examples of how women were treated in some countries with a high population of Muslim extremist. It’s NOT only Muslim countries that have these laws are practices that violate women’s human rights. Well actually they are not “laws” in most other countries they are just practices that the government overlooks. This Afghan pres has pretty big balls. The woman who wrote that book, I’m sure most has heard of, she is often on news shows on some panel discussing international politics. She is in hiding in the states I believe for this video that she made which displayed this woman with verses of the Koran, that Ayaan Hirsi Ali believed oppressed woman, written all over this woman’s body. I can’t remember if the woman was naked or just scantily clad, but her face and hair were covered. This man who was assisting her make this video was already killed in The Netherlands a few years ago. Google her name her story is interesting at one time the video was on you tube not sure if it’s still there. But anyway in this book she exposed many violent acts against women supported in laws in various countries in the Middle East and Africa. As a woman I would love to see the sexes be equal but I don’t think it will happen. All of the major religions support women as unequal and as long as our laws and standard practices are rooted in religion I really don’t think it’s going to happen! :(

Not surprised as much as I am disappointed. But this should be a wake up call to women to appreciate the freedoms you do share. So many women since I been posting on NWSO.com have pointed out how “old fashion” they are. You would wanna take full advantage of being fully equal (legally) with the next person(weither their white or male).

I know I vaule the little thing like consistently eating or looking at white girls without being hung! Matter fact I might sleep with a white girl tonight! LOL *Anybody who knows me gets this inside joke*

No it’s not a surprise at all and especially not in Afghanistan.

Even here in the US the gov’t was trying to control what goes on in our bedrooms. Many sodomy laws have just been invalidated a little more than a decade ago.

I would never get married simple as that.

That’s crazy….I dont know about any of the other guys on here…but the best part of being with a woman is knowing that she actually WANTS you…not that she’s being forced to because she wants to get her next meal!!! SMH @ this ridiculous law.

Yeah, I heard abou this. It’s disgusting but that’s the archaic way of thinking in that region of the world. There’s a book called “Princess” that really lays it all out. What’s even worse for the women is if they divorce their husbands (highly taboo), which according to the book i mentioned happens most of the time because of sadistic abuse like that, then they’re considered damaged goods. It’s like, something has to be wrong with them for them to have the nerve to be think they could just leave their men and still be desirable (no matter what said man has done). Absolutely disgusting.

@aaviana

Im not sure if they still do arranged marriages so you might not get a say in the matter!

Shitty how people can justify down right cruelty to one another! *SMH*

@da ThRONe

I was going to say the same thing. In a country where you can be forced to corpulate by law do you really think you can excercise free will when it comes to marriage?

Unlikely.

This is ridiculous. Which goes to show U that women are not respected there. I understand that men are in charge of their family; but it’s sad when a man can do that to his wife. That’s not love. What scares me is if th husband is forcing the wife to do immoral things. Then that is fine too, just starve her until she degrades herself. That is not love at all, Just POWER and SELFISHNESS……….

@ the ‘original’ Miss G…I’m sorry! Didn’t realise another Miss G already existed among the commenters so have now duly changed my name! lol

@ da ThRONe yes arranged (or should I say forced) marriages are still very much the norm and in most cases you don’t see who you are marrying until you get to the actual ceremony! Crazy! I have a friend who had this happen to her.

THIS SHIT IS CRAZY.THATS Y I STAY IN BOSTON CUS OF STUPID SHIT LIKE THIS.A WOMAN SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHOOSE TO HAVE SEX WITH HER HUSBAND AND NOT BE FORCED TO GIVE IT UP A MINIMUM OF 4 TIMES A WEEK.ODVIOUSLY THE MEN OVER THERE ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG IF THEY MADE A LAW FORCING A WIFE TO SLEEP WITH HER HUSBAND AND IT SHOULD BE WILLING.AND IT IS ALWAYS LAWS MADE TO BENIFIT MEN INSTEAD OF WOMEN,BECAUSE BEHIND EVERY GOOD MAN STANDS A GREAT WOMAN.WELL AT LEAST IT SHOULD BE…

Avatar
MIKE

THE REASON THAT WOMAN ARE IN THE PLACE THAT THEY STAND IS BECAUSE OF THERE BEING. GOD PLACE FOR WOMAN WAS NOT FORTHEM TO BE MISTREATED BUT TO BE SUBMISSIVE TO MAN AS A MAN.NOW IN THIS COUNTRY WOMEN WANTED EQUAL RIGHT NOW YOU GOT IT AND THEY CONTINUE TO PLAY BOTH SIDE OF THAT LAW. THEY BREAK LAWS AND COMPLAIN ABOUT BEING THE HEAD OF A HOUSEHOLD,MALE BASHING BUT LETS GET IT STRAIGHT YOU WOMEN WANTED A TASTE OF THE POWER THAT WAS GIVING TO MAN FROM GOD. NOW YOU CAN’T DEAL WITH THE STRESS THAT A MAN DEAL WITH AND YOU CAN’T BE SUBMISSIVE TO A MAN CAUSE YOU NO WHAT INDEPENDENCE FEEL LIKE.NOW U TRUN TO A GIRL FRIEND AS YOUR PARTNER IN LIFE. WHATS THIS WORLD COMING TO.AND ON THE SEX ROUTINE WHAT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HERE AND THERE WHEN THEY STARVE THEIR WOMAN FOR SEX WHEN THE MEN HERE ASK AND IF THEY DON’T RECEIVE SEX THEY HAVE MULTIPLE WOMAN AND BABIES ACROSS THE GLOBE.

This makes me very upset and disappointed. I would never even step foot over there! Sad to think some of our troops have to put up with all this non-sense.

they have to still be doing arranged marriages because otherwise he wouldn’t of had to starve her for sex she would have given herself to him freely because she actually was attracted to him or cared for him in some way.

Dc Man with a Plan

wow, I find this amazing. I am going to check out a few of the books mentioned to better acquaint myself with this way of thinking and handling business. I also wonder, based on recent blog subjects I have read up in here: Are these men considered “Alpha males” by any of the ladies? Are these guys considered to be “checking” their woman? I’m just curious how all that works out bcuz there were some women who LIKED being checked and this could be the ultimate experience of knowing your man got things covered bcuz even the LAW is on his side. As unequaled, biased and glass ceiling filled as western society can be …still gotta think the USA, and the MEN in it…ain’t ALL that bad, after all………
I think a lot of women FORGET how life was when women were mostly considered as property….no drivers license, no post secondary education, not many work related options…..Yeah, there’s alot to take for granted, especially when we get to talkin about “checking your woman” and the difficulty many highly educated, successful women have in finding a partner they find “equal” and compatible with their expectations and lifestyle. It’s easy to romanticize going back to the old ways, when you can pick and choose what rules and standards apply, but look to Afghanistan to get a peek at how life USED to be here too, to one degree or another…..

I am FURIOUS. I remember the outcry over the original law and I actually thought that Karzai had seen the error of his ways. I guess it shows how much value a woman’s life holds over there.

starve my wife? of course not. Hungry p*ssy can’t be good p*ssy. How she’s gonna ride you right if she’s not nourished right?

but a woman is not supposed to hold out on her husband, that’s Biblical law.

#16 Michael Jackson Never Spoke To Me (Until Now)

Michael Jackson would have celebrated his 51st birthday today. Maybe I’m alone but it’s actually hard for me to believe he was that old. I guess it makes sense when you actually think about, his career started when he was just five-years old and he was such a constant figure in the worlds of music [...]

#18 A Hollow Prayer (You Actually Have to Mean the Words)

A big part of Ramadan is daily prayer and reading of the Koran (or Qur’an). As a non-Muslim partaking in my own version of this journey, though, I’ve opted not to read the holy text (not yet at least) but I have been on bended knee at least twice daily to have conversations with God.

I’ll [...]
