#00 An Introduction to 30 in 30, Part 3 (60 Blogs in 30 Days)

August 21st 2009 in 30 in 30, Pt. 3, Religion/Spirituality, Writing/Fiction

30-days-2009

If you’ve been paying attention to the message and promo video (how come no one has commented on it?) at the end of the posts this past week, you’ll know that 30 in 30, Part 3 starts tomorrow at sunrise EST. The NWSO readership has grown considerable since last year’s blog marathon so a lot of people are still in the dark as to what exactly it is and why they should care. I figured I’d clear up a few things with a brief FAQ. Hopefully, I can answer all your questions below, if not just leave a comment and I’ll holla back as always.

WHAT EXACTLY IS 30 IN 30?
The name of the series dates back to before NakedWithSocksOn.com was even up and running. Back when I was blogging on MySpace for fun I decided to do 30 blogs in 30 days to led up to my 30th birthday. I resurrected the series last year as a way to document my first time doing Ramadan, which includes a 30-day fast that fell in line with the whole 30 in 30 theme. The only difference was I wound up doing a whopping 90 blogs in 30 days. I realized after the fact that was a bit too much content for people to digest, so I scaled this year’s down to just 60 blogs.

WHAT IS RAMADAN?
It’s the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, sexual conduct, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill natured during sunlight hours. Only once the sun has set can participants break fast and resume eating and drinking (this does not include alcoholic beverages or engaging in sexual activity, although married couples are allowed to be intimate). The fast starts again with the following day’s sunrise and last approximately 30 days.

The purpose of Ramadan is to teach Muslims patience, modesty, spirituality and charity, as well as express their devotion to Allah through daily prayer and reading of the Qur’an (or Koran). While fasting is a big part of the physical process, mental cleansing is the primary goal. In fact, simply going through the motions means nothing unless the intent to do and be better is in your heart. Overall, Ramadan promotes good character—particularly truthfulness and trustworthiness—and encourages people to do away with bad habits and change his or her circumstances for the better.

There is so much more to the process, but the above lays out the basic principles that I have discovered and how I have interpreted them. If anyone with more knowledge on the subject spots any errors on my part, feel free to correct me or make any additions regarding any vital steps I may have overlooked.

IS NWSO MUSLIM?
No, I am not Muslim and presently don’t have any plans to convert. However, I was introduced to Ramadan two years ago and was so intrigued by the practice and its character building that I decided to observe it last year and truly got something wonderful out of the experience. As a non-Muslim I observed my own version of Ramadan, adhering to the daily fast and purity of thought but opting not to read the Qur’an or attend mosque. I did, however, pray regularly and attended church. I could have done more of both, though.

I would like to make it clear that I mean no disrespect to anyone that is Muslim by participating in Ramadan (or my version of it). It’s just that I was able to get something out of the experience last year that I feel put me on a better path and I look forward to embarking on this spiritual journey once again and for years to come. Participating in Ramadan has provided me with structure, focus and direction. It’s also forced me to take a look within myself and not only take note of my flaws but make moves towards correcting them.

WHAT HAPPENED TO WET WEDNESDAYS?
Given the fact that I have to refrain from “sexual conduct” and “indulging in anything that is in excess or ill natured,” I basically have to censor myself. Things like Wet Wednesdays, graphic discussions about sex, or the use of foul language or antagonistic commentary are not conducive to the journey. I’m not only purging physically through this fast, but mentally and spiritually as well. Hopefully, most of you will not only understand that but respect it as well.

I know the recent introduction of Wet Wednesdays has led some to view NakedWithSocksOn.com as merely just a “sex blog” but I feel to label the site as such is very limiting. Yes, we have very adult conversations, but sex is just one component of the conversations we have here. If you come for the sex talk that’s great, but I hope you stay and continue to come back for the real talk on life, relationships, family, our community and everything in between.

Just as I proved last year, NakedWithSocksOn.com doesn’t need s-e-x to make a point, I can be just as captivating recounting the hilarious tales from my life, writing a heartfelt poem, discussing politics and breaking down the always entertaining dynamic between men and women. Don’t view this as a loss of one part of the blog you like, but a refocusing on the other important elements that sometimes get overlooked.

Without having the shock value of sex at my disposal during this time of reflection, I foresee some of my strongest work on the horizon. Regardless of what I write over the next month, be rest assured that I will maintain my honesty and level of quality you’ve come to expect from NakedWithSocksOn.com.

WHEN WILL NEW BLOGS GO UP?
For those that missed the memo in my first promo clip (CLICK HERE) I normally post at 12am EST Monday through Friday. Being that I now have to wake up around 5:30am to pray and consume all of my nourishments for the day before sunrise, I’ve decided to adjust the posting schedule during 30 in 30, Part 3.

Everything (within my power) will be tied to the sun and moon (CLICK HERE for sun chart). The first post of each day will go up at sunrise (around 6am) and will fall in line with the discussion topics y’all have become used to (minus the sex talk and negative outlooks, of course). Depending on where I am, the second post will go up shortly after sunset (before 8pm) and will be a free-flowing entry recapping my personal journey that particular day. There won’t be any rhyme or reason to what those entries will cover, I’ll just write what I feel and you’ll get me in my rawest form. You can check last year’s Morning Monologues and Evening Epilogues in the category section below for examples.

Although I’m doing 30 less blogs this year, my schedule is considerably more hectic given the fact that I’m freelancing, so one or two evening posts may go up later than expected or I may not feel like writing and do a video entry instead. We’ll just see how things go and take it from there.

WHAT DO YOU NEED FROM US?
Respect. A lot of people may not understand what I’m doing in terms of this fast and what it all means, but this is very serious to me and it takes a lot for me to be sharing the experience with you. With that said, I just ask that folks be respectful at all times and mindful that I have to keep my thoughts and actions pure (i.e. no lustful thoughts, cursing, negative outlooks, etc.).

I stress this for a specific reason. On the eve of last year’s fast, someone sent me an anonymous email with a link to some pornography with a message that said something to the effect of, “enjoy.” I never found out who sent the email because their name wasn’t attached to the address, but I imagine it was someone I called a “friend” because it came to my personal account.

As much of a joke he or she thought that was, I took it as a major slap to the face—especially from someone that apparently knew me. Although the fast doesn’t start until tomorrow, I’ve been mentally preparing for the past two weeks already cutting out liquor and curbing my use of profanity, so sending an email like that just went against everything I was striving for. It just showed that the person had no respect for what I was about to embark on. I hold no ill will or malice towards him or her, but I take this very seriously and I ask that my friends and readers do as well.

ANY LAST WORDS?
I just want to thank you all in advance for taking the time out to read this and hopefully following my journey over the next 30 days. I look forward to sharing my experiences, accomplishments and faults, while growing with you in the process.

Ramadan Mubarak! (a blessed Ramadan!)

Hi, im a muslim and will also be fasting for the next month. I think its great you have your own version of ramadan and it is my hope and my prayer that you benefit in strength and spirit in this journey. The first couple days of ramadan are always tough for me, i cant seem to eat anything that early in the morning but gradually i get used it..and then wen its over i still tend to get up for a 4am feed for a couple days lol i guess the body just gets used to eating at that time. Good Luck Ans and i look fwd to reading and commenting on ur blogs for the next month.

Hey, I’ve been lurking on here for a while but never commented! Have to say that this is the best blog I’ve ever come across (imo)! I live in London so the timing of your posts have kept me entertained on my train journeys to work and now I get to look forward to posts before I head off to bed too! Yay! Anyway just wanted to wish you good luck with 60/30 and the fast and all. Sounds like a very cool experience!

You’re an amazing writer…I enjoy each and every one of your posts plus the comments! Fab blog…keep doing you’re thang mister!

Yo, dude. You are an extraordinary man and you set a wonderfully inclusive example of what ppl can and should be about (especially for a New Yorker!) I perused the vide clip the other day, but it was a commercial and you should know how we do during commercials, we take a break, tune out, etc,. Unless it’s the super bowl……. At your urging, I watch the whole thing. It’s cool–for a commercial. You’re improving your technique, pat your self on the back…lol
I viewed some of last years 30 in 30 since I wasn’t around your site last year and I HOPE you do NOT allow comments during your 30n30 marathon.
At any rate, I respect what you are doing, the value of your sharing this disciplined, spiritual, cleansing experience and the value of your using your life to show ways we can bridge the gap between the Christian world and the Muslim world, even if it’s indirectly done and not your intention. I have always found Ramadan a fascinating aspect of Islam and I think you will encourage many ppl to experiment with actions that lead them on a journey of introspection and self improvement just from sharing your experience. It’s funny how MOST Black ppl have great respect for Malcom X, but then act like we conveniently forgot he was of the Islamic faith.
Peace and continued blessings to you in all that you do. You, my brotha, are truly a FOR REAL MAN!

Ans, i pray that you will get everything you want out of this journey. It takes a lot to go on a journey like that, and then to bring strangers along with you is just wondering. Maybe we can get something out of this too. I cant believe someone would send you an email like that….that is the most dis-respectful thing i have ever heard. People are so selfish these days. Just like @Lonias said….

I cannot wait to take this journey with you too!!!!

@DC

Peace, brother.

Thanx as always for your perspective and input (with splashes of humor).

Question, though, why do you suggest no commenting during the series? Discussions and input are vital parts of the little community we have built here. I some times feel like we’re all in one big house and people explore different rooms on the site and play housekeeper/headmaster. lol

@Lonias

No, no, it wasn’t about compliments I was just wondering if people had even noticed it since I had only heard 1 or 2 passing comments regarding the clip. Thought maybe the black background may have made it less noticeable and then overlooked.

Just cause you stop cussing for thirty days dont mean I will :D ! Bring on the two-a-days! Its like football practice all over again.

@ da ThRONe (actually Tron in this case)

All i ask is that you be respectful and not too “abrasive” should I discuss religion or anything of the sort. part of the process for me is to avoid negativity, anger, etc. So hopefully nothing will seem too “silly” to you, while it’s important and vital to me.

Love is love, brother.

@ Ans……Yo, dude, after yesterday’s blog, U asking THAT question? There was a lot of heat up in here and though your temperament, tone and subject starts the ball rolling, things can easily get blown out of proportion. ppl can easily get combative with ME and Da throne from time to time, but I’ma just chill for the next 30 and let my keyboard rest. I wouldn’t want any UNINTENTIONAL negativity I sometimes cause, to breach your tranquility. I respect what you’re doing, so at the end of the day, I’ma try to listen and learn and just refrain from making any comments other than something applauding someone else’s statement or input. That will take discipline on MY part, so I’ma be working on ME too…lol

@DC

Def hear you. Just I don’t foresee my subject matter for the next 30 days being one that would/should lead to such left discussions. I could be wrong, but as long as folks follow your lead and respect where I’m coming from and going, we should all be fine.

I pray that you will receive all that you are seeking during this time. Fasting and purging are absolutely necessary at times. Clearing your mind, body and spirit, you can make room for the things you need. I wish you the best and I can’t wait for the 60/30!

Ans, there is a season of fasting for Christians as well, it is called the Lenten Season and is usually for 40 days before Easter and it is for the same purpose as Ramadan.

I’m just saying…if your purpose is self discipline, mental and spiritual clarity you can exercise that option by participating in the Christian version as well :-) .

@ older&wiser

I’m familiar with Lent (I went to Catholic school for 12 years) but from my recollection it was primarily a fast of one thing of your choosing. (I.e. giving up drinking liquor, red meat, sex, etc.) I’m sure there are the spiritual cleansing parts associated with that as well but I just can’t recall that at the moment, it was a long time ago.

Also, many religions have their own form of fasting. Someone hit me earlier explaining that Yom Kippur is a fast for the Jewish faith.

To each his and her own, whatever brings you to a better point spiritually, mentally and physically I’m with…

Hello NWSO
I just wanted to say I have been enjoying your blog for quite some time and this is the first time I really wanted to make a comment..
Thursdays blog really stirred up a lot of views pertaining to how your regulars viewed “LET A MAN BE A MAN.”

The responses caused me to have a lot of mixed emotions.
The reparte’ between some of them was hilarious as well as insightful.

I am looking forward to reading more of your blogs what ever they are about I know they will be wonderful and enlightening..

@DC Man
I really appreciate your comments so please don’t hold back or take anything anyone says about your viewpoints too personally. I really enjoy what you and the rest of the regular posters here have to say. You too Da ThRONe :P

This is like our own little community at times. We don’t always have to agree but I’m with you Ans, we can be respectful to each other. Of course I voted by the way! Hope others did too. You deserve all the success that is coming your way.

Good luck Ans, can’t wait to read 60 in 30.

[...] In addition to great daily blogs on random subjects, he created a blog series called “30 Blogs in 30 Days”. Last year he did waaaaaaay more than 30 blogs (90) and shared some of his most personal thoughts and experiences. As an avid reader, I saw him tackle personal issues and even saw him come to terms with/resolve many issues that many of his readers share. (To learn more about his inspiration for the series, click here.) [...]

Let a Man Be a Man (Follow the Leader)

Dear NWSO,

I’m a huge fan of your blog—I think it’s great. Last night, I was watching The Ugly Truth and the guy in the movie was saying that women need to “let a man be a man.” What does he mean by that? Should we [women] put our success on hold just because a man [...]

#01 Angels With Broken Wings (Life, Death & In Between)

On my way to swim class the other day, I noticed something disturbing. The train station I was at was above ground and birds tend to fly back and forth through the rafters.

Once I found a comfortable perch on the platform to await the train, I began to survey the trash strewn aimlessly across the [...]
