The female benchmark has been reset by Beyonce. Clearly she is the whats up with the black ladies.

I think Denzel kinda started falling off a a while ago (5 to 10 years) and not because of his age either. He looks tired and a bit unfit, a bit sloppy too and that’s unattractive to me. Morris, Will Smith, Blair Underwood are physically in better shape and that boost your overall appearance. Halle will continue to be hot if she keeps it fit like she’s doing now. I used to think Denzel was fine but he just looking like he only gets it together for a movie role if its required

Growing up, I never understood the appeal of Denzel Washington. Now that I’m in my twenties, and can appreciate an older man, I definitely see why women have fawned over him for all these years. The man was (and still is) handsome, and he has this ‘cool’ aura about him. Denzel is the man. However, he is starting to get up there in age.

Idris Elba is the new benchmark in my book. He oozes sex appeal. His British accent is sexy and I love how well he masks it to play American characters, like Stringer Bell. I think, with the right roles and exposure, Idris can definitely be the Denzel of my generation.

Denzel is handsome, but I can’t give lusty looks to a man who has a son older than I am. That’s just wrong. The same goes for Blair, Morris, Will and the rest. Even if they don’t have kids in my age range, they’re still past the point where I could look at them and think “he can get it.” They’re sexy, but they CANNOT get it.

I don’t know if you were a fan of The Wire on HBO, but Jamie Hector aka Marlo and Tristan Wilds (though he’s a year younger than I am) are definitely young men that make me swoon!

Blair Underwood is younger than Denzel but I still consider them within the same era. I think he was WAY underrated–Blair has always been FINE (sans Something New–the conk wasnt workin for him)
Morris hasnt been hot since The Best Man era–he didnt look that great to me in the commercials for “Not Easily Broken”…plus he doesnt have much of a career these days either…

IDRIS for the pure sexy swag def…Will Smith got swag too, plus we will remember his films (over Idris–I love THE WIRE–own all seasons–but he needs to produce more quality work in order to stay in the running IMO)…but even Idris is beginning to look older….
I will always love my Stringer Bell tho..

There’s quite a few beautiful women out there (like the ones you named NWSO), but Halle is just incomparable (she can get it too…LOL).

Halle always WAS a good benchmark, until Monster ball. She lost a little shine IMO after that movie, even though she won an oscar for it…..There are MANY women that could replace her, and the ones you mentioned are definitely on the list. They’re kinda hard to keep up with bcuz there are so many one hit wonders, or actresses who only shine for a hot minute–It takes time to replace a real DIME! We can add Michelle Crisette cuz she’s on the thick side but keeps it sexy and has that exotic voice; Scotland chick, Laura Izibor can get it too, not that she’s standout sexy, but being cute and having that voice..HELL to the yeah! AND though Beyonce rep’s well for thick gurls…I’d still take Nick Cannons wife, Mariah……..Milk does her body real good……

I too didnt understand the appeal of Denzel, but when I really look at him, its because he is average looking that is the appeal! He makes you think you could have him. Think about it: most celebs are on this high horse like they are too good for the commoners. Denzel is just a cool, calm, sexy, confident, family man with charm who takes care of business. That is what makes Denzel so sexy!!! Every woman wants a man like that and truth be told, we could date a Denzel before more what you all like to call “handsome” actors. And that walk….SHUTUP! Lol!

As far as women, not knocking Halle at all because the woman is BEAUTIFUL but I think because Halle is more main stream she gets the crown. Angela Bassett and Jennifer Lewis are age-less beauties to me that dont get their just due. Again, no offense to Halle, but I think we are still subject to the light-skinned-is-more beautiful bc of European standards fed to us during slavery times.

I think there’s a lot of sexy black men on screen right now. Idris Elba, DEREK LUKE, Boris Kodjoe, Wood Harris (he’s tall!), Columbus Short, Mekhi Phifer, Michael Ealy, Lamman Rucker, etc.

But Denzel in Training Day will forever be emblazoned in my mind as the sexiest character ever!

And I wanted to add the sista from the Game…She was Tia back in her younger days, but now that she’s grown, shortee working with a FULL deck..and what about little rudy from the cosby’s? She was whipped in Tylers Perry’s last flick but I saw her in Jet and DAMN…Rudy all grown up too! I’m not lookin up real names, but y’all know who I’m talkin bout..don’t make me do research….

I can’t comment on Denzel, what would I know? It’s kinda sad though because cats like Will Smith, Idris and Morris have been in the public eye for a minute. So the real question is where are the new young Black leading men?

I knew sooner than later the issue of Halle being “light” would be introduced. Whateva…it is what it is…….While I prefer dark berries in my personal life, the fact is the music and film INDUSTRY promotes whom they promote. I’m certain light skinned women have historically received more attention and gotten more play, consequnetly, there are going to be MORE of them to chose from in a topic such as this. Vivica Fox has always been sexy and so is Angela bassett. I personally would take Vivica over Halle, but the question was about the NEW female sex symbols, not the best of the older ones. @ Jlaw, make a list of all the darker hued actresses (since that’s my focus) that you can think of….Don’t strain yourself…….. There does seem to be more darker brothers making it than sisters, but again, it is what it is.

I have a thing for slightly older men, but Denzel is too old for me. Not that he’s not attractive, but you can tell that he’s getting older. Now, if this was 2001 and he still looked like he did in Training Day, then he could definitely “get it.” Since Dezel is looking mighty old these days, I think Idris Elba is the benchmark of black beauty now…Most black women think he’s fine. He’s alright to me, but I would take Common, Boris Kodjoe, Lamman Rucker, Laz Alonso, T.J. Holmes, and Christian Keyes over him any day.

Im not sure about the ladies, i understand the beyonce thing bc she’s always in the spotlight but she looks too much like her scary mom so i dont think she can hold the title as long as Halle.

As for the men, I never got the whole Denzel thing when I was younger and I still don’t at 25…he’s just never been attractive to me. Morris could still get it bald and all but I think Will Smith might be the new Denzel. Younger he was real funny lookin but he looks so good now and is getting better with age.

I just think its funny how women benchmark guys are more about the “SWAG” and less about how they look. While men benchmark is all about looks. Halle Berry seems really nice but she has no personality IMO. Beyonce his a lil more personality but shes more diva by name then by “SWAG”.

You think Beyonce has personality? Not from what I read, she’s too damn media trained. Every interview I’ve read on her was YAWN boring. She says what she’s trained to say, IMO.

I’d like to add that Anthony Mackie has always done something for me – Yale (or Julliard) educated, takes risks with many of the roles he chooses, and yes I became a convert after seeing She Hate Me. And he’s from the South.

I think hands down Boris Kodjoe is the sexiest male out there. Common and Brian J. White are not far behind him.

As far as females. Alicia Keys, Kerri Washington and Eva Marcille are gorgeous. Halle is still holding the crown however these ladies are next in line.

I dont think the “Title” has everything to do with being the best looking. I think it evolves more around perception of beauty, popularity, and the dreaded “Crossover appeal”. I dont think Beyonce is the most attractive female in the business nor did I think Halle was ,but they both have all three things.

Denzel Washington and Halle Berry are both Classics! They will never go “out of style” in my opinion.

I never saw what was so great about Denzel. I mean, he’s a handsome man and seems to have a cool personality, but he’s never done it for me. I LOVE me some Idris Elba and Wood Harris. Idris was the only reason I saw “Obsessed.” Okay, well, I did want to see how bad Beyonce’s acting would be too! Wood really got my attention in “Paid In Full.” He’s not flashy, but he’s oh so sexy at the same time!

I think both Denzel and Halle should stay at the top. Denzel is not only attractive, but what about his acting skills….and HOW MANY MOVIES DOES HE HAVE??????????? My hats off to both of them, I love them both.

IMO, Denzel is hot like your best friend’s dad…attractive, but its his confidence and character that really does it for you, and those things are timeless.
That being said, if we are talkin about the benchmark strictly on looks:

Personally, I think Angelina Jolie is a major contendor also. She definitely has a positive mix of looks and talent. I think she’s extremely versatile when it comes to her acting roles. She’s not just a pretty face like Halle is to me. I think she’s a beautiful woman but I feel as though her ability as an actress has alot to be desired. I felt like she did NOT deserve an Oscar for Monster’s Ball. Man, that movie was GARBAGE. Denzel is indeed a powerful presence on the silver screen. To me his acting prowess is uncanny like Al Pacino and Robert Deniro. Even though my mom and her croonies refer to him as their “Lawd have mercy man”, I beg to differ. His looks are average to me.

Given a choice between Beyonce and Alicia Keys Im taking miss Keys. But I dont think the title “Hottest in the game” goes to who your personal favorite is.

Halle is overrated, always was, always will be. she’s beautiful but that’s about it. she can’t act, she’s gotten better, but her best role was the crackhead in Jungle Fever. Unfortunately, Hollywood seems afraid to cast other black female actresses. There is no way she should have been Storm!

I get the appeal of Denzel, but he’s never done it for me. He definitely draws you into whatever movie he’s in, but seeng him in Glory made me understand the hoopla.

I never really drank the kool-aid about either of them. for years, they both played the same character: he – upstanding, strong black man, (Will Smith does this too) she – needy female. He broke out when he did Training Day and she… well, she still generally plays the same needy chick.

It’s sad that mainstream has perpetrated this myth that we can only have one of each per generation. Da Throne hit it on the head with the three requirements.

I don’t have any one “hot” mal eor female because I think there are many good actors out there, however they are not getting a chance to really display their skills. Most of the time black actors/actresses still end up being the sidekick or have to do a “bio” (Ali, Last King of Scotland, Ray, etc) pic in order to get acknowledged.

Beyonce is way beyond Britney even in the “White People” circles. She has moved on to acting(which she sucks at but is improving), she is still on top of the R&B game and is link to one of the most powerful men in entertainment.

I am far from a Beyonce fanatic ,but Im just calling it how I see it. I dont think there is a black female right now under 35 that young ladies(mostly of color) look up to more than Bee or if you polled men(of any color) and ask them about the most attractive black female celebs under 35 Beyonce would win in a landside. So IMO that gives her the crown.

Yup, Boris is “Germanian” … born and raised….well ok, technically born in Austria, but raised here. His pops is from Ghana, I believe, and his mom is German.

IMO… today’s Denzel would be Stringer Bell… Not into men, but if you need MAN of talent and change, who could fit any role it would be him… especially after seeing him in Obessed. He and Ali carried that movie…

He just needs to right “movie” not TV sitcom or series to blow him up… Although, the Wire brought him to the forefront of people minds and hearts.

As far as Actresses goes, I do not see a REAL replacement for Halle. Even after child, Monster Ball, and failed relationships… she carries herself as a REAL LADY… It helps that her body is nice and tight.

If a selection had to be made, I would select on of the following four: Regina King, Sanaa, Gabbie, or Paula P.
Each one holds their own and made some unwise films but, strong nonetheless… the only thing is IMO Gabbie is starting to be typecast otherwise, she would be one the next greats.

IMO-Idris Elba all day everyday like Harry Belafonte!!! Talented and gorgeous…and a sweetheart. Derek “uke is another good mention. Inever understood what the big deal was about Denzel’s look until Training Day. But for the most part think that was more about swag then anything else. Think that Denzel is a good overall package. Not the finest brother, but he’s got swag off screen, is a family man and has a beautiful smile. I’ve seen him recently, and he’s not looking good…but I really think that has to do with how he needed to prepare for that role.

As for Halle…think she’s beautiful and a good actress. Aside from Dorothy Dandridge don’t feel she’s had a killer role. But she’s definitely another good overall package. Kerry Washington is the most underrated black actress (along w/Taraji Henson). I gotta comment on Beyonce…1st off she’s not an actress at all. She should stick to the music. I think Da Throne said something about females under 35 looking up to Beyonce. Nah D, I’m 32 and she is not my go to celebrity. Quite honestly, can’t think of one. I think something that people should understand about Beyonce is that she is an Entertainer. Not a singer or a dancer. Looks…come on now, its the body. I said majority of black females under 35 would pick Beyonce as there benchmark of beauty. I thought this blog was about the two benchmark of black beauty not who we like personally.
