Is it Time to Replace Denzel And Halle? (Out With the Old)
For as long as I can remember, Denzel Washington has always been the man that women of color defer to. Want to tear down a brother’s ego when he’s trying to holla with no game? Reference Mr. Washington. “Negro, please, you ain’t no Denzel.” Want to describe your dream man? Reference the Oscar-winner. “Ooh, girl, he gotta look like Denzel.”
It’s not just the females that do it either. If you’ve been reading this blog for a minute, you should have noticed that any time I’m trying to describe a beautiful woman I mention the G.L.O.A.T. (Greatest Lady of All Time), Halle Berry. Thanks to Hurricane Chris and his ode to Ms. Make-Me-Feel-Good, I know I’m not the only one that has a hard on for Halle. Maybe that makes me biased, but I don’t think anyone’s going to knock the 42-years old actress off her perfect perch any time soon. However, I have my doubts about Denzel.
Last week I was watching TV when the commercial for The Taking of Pelham 123 came on. I saw Denzel on the screen and noticed slight hues of grey infiltrating his fro. I thought to myself: Is he still the man that makes sisters swoon or has he been replaced by a young blood?
Hell, if I know, I’m a guy, I pay more attention to the Lauren Londons, Megan Goods and Sharon Leals of the world. So I decided to hit Twitter and sent out the following message:
“Ladies, is Denzel still the go-to “attractive” guy? I mean, he is getting a bit wrinkly now. Who’s the ’09 benchmark of Black male beauty?”
It was just one of my many random Twitter thoughts (you should follow me, you might like it) so I didn’t expect much from it, but the ladies came out the woodwork to comment on my Twitter page and FaceBook status.
Amid the possible contenders for Denzel’s crown came familiar names like Will Smith (“Nuff said”), Idris Elba (“He’s the new benchmark”) and Boris Kodjoe (“Beautiful. Sexy. Smart. Family Man. His name flows off my tongue quite easily”). There were also a few that I never heard of like T.J. Holmes. Apparently he’s the “sexiest man on CNN.” Well, according to one of my new Twitter followers.
Hell if I know, and who am I to argue. I’m too busy keeping track of hot honeys like Keri Hilson, Alicia Keys and Rihanna.
Despite my staunchly hetero stance on the online debate, I was shocked by the following Tweet:
“@NakedWithSocks I Literally just read essence.com women have Morris Chestnut 59%, Denzel 18%, Will Smith 15%, Blair Underwood 12% as leading men… It was for 40+ category. Maybe Boris isn’t old enuff yet for them cougars lol!”
Morris Chestnut? You mean to tell me “Ricky” from Boyz N the Hood is still what’s poppin’? He’s the heir to Denzel’s throne? No shots, Morris reps for dark skinned brothers like myself, but I figured Will Smith would rank higher. But again, I’m a guy that loves women so what do I know.
In fact, there were a few women that chimed in to say that Denzel can still got it “wrinkles” and all.
“Wrinkly?!?!?!?! Don’t you know that BLACK don’t CRACK!. Lol”
“Denzel has no wrinkles. More charm and appeal as he ages!”
“Swagger, there are NONE like Denzel!!!”
“The fact that Denzel is 50+ is what makes him so attractive to me (still). I can tell he shines his shoes (or has them shined) and cocks his hat to the side just so when he goes out. That old-school ish.”
Based on the mixed feedback from the ladies on Twitter and FaceBook, I thought this was a bigger discussion the rest of y’all should be in on. Plus, the comments made me feel like I was in a digital swordfight. I wanted to balance things out by hearing from some of the fellas about who the hot chicks on the come up are.
So what are your thoughts? Do you think Denzel and Halle still represent the benchmark for Black beauty in the mainstream? Or have they been around so long that people just use them as default names/examples? Have Denzel and Halle gotten more attractive with age or are they starting to fall off? If so, who are some of the hot actors and actresses that deserve to be recognized in the looks department instead of them? Are you on the other side of the fence and never thought Denzel or Halle were that hot?
Speak your piece…
